Lets Carve a Pumpkin!!

With Halloween only a week away – who can resist the fun of carving your own pumpkin? So let’s roll up our sleeves and let the ewwy gooey fun begin.

Step 1: Prep The Carving Area

If the weather permits – take this messy task outdoors and cover a table with a cheap disposable plastic tablecloth or oversize garbage bag that you can roll up and throw out after you carve. Too cold for outside? There’s always the kitchen island or table that can be used too.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools

You can get standard pumpkin carving kits at your local market or craft stores. But you can also use items you already have in the kitchen – like an ice cream scooper, filet knife, paring knife and a lemon zest/peeler.

Step 3: Cut A Hole In The Back or The Top

Cut a square or circular opening in either the back or the top of the pumpkin. Make sure it’s large enough to accommodate a hand and wrist to scoop out the insides.

Step 4: Scoop Out The Guts

Using your hands or ice cream scooper – reach in and pull out the guts (seeds and strings) of the pumpkin. Make sure to remove every last bit to prevent premature rot and also to keep little critters away.

Step 5: Decide On Your Design

Sketch your design on paper, then draw it onto your pumpkin using a dry erase marker or washable marker – this makes for easy clean up if you mess up.

Step 6: Let The Carving Begin

Using the sharpest knife in your kit or kitchen – carefully cut along the lines of your design. Starting with the smallest cuts before removing any bigger sections until you’ve finished your masterpiece

Step 7: Let It Shine

You can use tea light candles, battery operated lights, glow sticks or flameless candles. If you use a real candle – remember to cut a vent in the top of the pumpkin so the smoke can escape.
