Fun Ways to Give Back
As we head into the holidays and host our first Parker Group #GiveLocal event on Veteran’s Day – I wanted to explore the many ways we can all help those in need and contribute to the common good. This can be through volunteer groups, nonprofit organizations and charities.
Here a just a few fun ways to give back I thought would be great to share…
I’m a HUGE animal lover and I know many of you are too - so reach out to your local animal shelter and look into what volunteer opportunities they have open. I can imagine that many of the tasks might not be that glamorous but you’ll get to spend some quality time with some really loving, super cute and cuddly animals. A win-win in my book!
Organize a collection of new and gently used clothing and accessories from family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Host a clothing sale and donate all the proceeds to a local charity. Any un-purchased items can also be donated to a local shelter.
Now I don’t have the greenest of thumbs but wouldn’t it be fun to volunteer at a local community garden to help maintain an existing plot or common area in your community? Nothing brightens someone’s day more than being surrounded by beautiful flowers or being the receiver of a bounty of fresh veggies. If a community garden doesn’t exist in your area – start one of your own with some of your fellow gardeners.
Share Your Time
Sometimes the only thing someone may need is the company of another to talk to and share some stories with. Consider visiting a local senior center, veteran’s club or hospital. If your dog is super friendly and the facility allows pets – bring him along and share that puppy love.
The Arts and Crafts
Do you have a passion for the arts or known for being crafty? There are several places looking for volunteers to help with activities for kids – after school programs, daycare centers, schools, churches, camps, YMCA, etc. You can put your skills to work by helping children learn how to draw or paint, perform in a play, enhance their vocals, play an instrument and more.
I came across a website that matches you with local groups looking for volunteers. Check it out! www.volunteermatch.org.
